In a world revolving around technology and communicating on phones, it’s important put the devices down and have a real conversation. Here are tips on how to lead and start a conversation with new topics.
As humans, we crave connection with others. Whether it’s with friends, family, or a romantic partner, building strong relationships is an essential part of a fulfilling life. However, getting to know someone on a deeper level can be challenging. We often struggle with finding the right words to say or the right questions to ask. To help break the ice (pun intended), we’ve compiled a list of conversation topics to really get to know someone.
-
Childhood memories
Everyone has stories from their childhood that shaped who they are today. Asking someone about their favourite childhood memory or what they were like as a kid can give you insight into their personality and values.
-
Travel experiences
Traveling can be a transformative experience, and sharing stories of your travels with someone can be a great way to bond. Ask about their favourite trip, the most memorable place they’ve visited, or where they would love to go next!
-
Hobbies and passions
Learning about someone’s hobbies and passions can be a great way to get to know them on a deeper level. Ask about what they enjoy doing in their free time or what they’re currently reading or watching.
-
Personal goals
Asking about someone’s personal goals can give you a glimpse into their dreams and aspirations. Whether it’s a career goal or a personal milestone, sharing these aspirations can help you both connect and support each other.
-
Cultural background
Everyone has a unique cultural background, and sharing stories about your heritage and traditions can be a great way to learn more about someone’s values and beliefs.
-
Bucket list items
Everyone has things they want to accomplish in life, and asking about someone’s bucket list can be a fun way to learn more about their desires and ambitions.
-
Overcoming challenges
Life is full of ups and downs, and asking someone about a challenge they’ve overcome can be a powerful way to connect. It can also show you their resilience and strength.
-
Personal growth
Asking someone about their personal growth journey can be a great way to learn about their self-awareness and dedication to personal development. Ask about a time they realised they needed to make a change and what steps they took to grow and improve.

Favourite drink
It’s so easy to bond over favourite drinks – whether it’s a standard soft drink, cocktail, or mocktail preference. Favourite drinks could then lead into what your preference says about you, or your favourite bar to enjoy said drink. Here at The Ice Co, one of our personal favourite drinks is our take on the classic – Aperol Spritz.
Aperol Strawberry Spritz
Ingredients:
x1 handful Polar Cube ice
x1 measure Aperol
x2 measures Prosecco
x1 measure Strawberry liqueur
Top up: soda water
Garnish: strawberries & orange wheels
Method:
- Add the ice, Aperol and strawberry liqueur to a cocktail shaker and shake well.
- Strain over a glass full of ice and pour in the Prosecco and top up with soda water.
- Garnish with a strawberry and an orange wheel before serving!

Favourite food
Another conversation topic that opens the floor is favourite food. Express interest by asking about foods from different cultures, the weirdest / craziest foods you’ve tried, foods that you dislike – anything goes! With BBQ season coming up, we have some great food and drink-related hacks to keep in mind at your next BBQ!
Conversation topics can be great icebreakers when getting to know someone on a deeper level. Remember to disengage from your phone, listen actively and ask follow-up questions to show that you’re interested. And of course, don’t forget to bring some ice to keep your drinks cold while you chat!
