Our summer poetry competition encouraged children all over the UK to get creative with their idea of the perfect cool summer. On the sunny morning of July 16th, we paid Ashbrook Infant and Nursery School a visit to gift the winner of our poetry competition, Alice, her prize of a fantastic £500 art and crafts bundle to share with all her school friends. Derbyshire also had an unforgettable visitor – The Ice Cube Dude!
Alice painted a beautiful picture with her poem, from day trips to the seaside with delicious fish and chips to the simple pleasure of melting ice lollies on a hot day. You can read her winning entry below.
Day trips, fish and chips
A sandy beach, a juicy peach
Buckets and spades, wearing shades
Staying up late, baking cake
Hand-held fans, ice cream vans
Lolly puddles, lots of cuddles
Paddling pool, staying cool
Drinks with ice – summer is nice!
During our visit, Alice’s poem was then read aloud by her head teacher Helen Roebuck for everyone to enjoy during assembly. After the poem reading, it was time for The Ice Cube Dude to present Alice with her well-deserved prize. To make the day even more memorable, we took the opportunity to snap some photos with The Ice Cube Dude, Alice and the Headteacher with the arts and crafts hamper.
The Ice Cube Dude then waved goodbye and set upon his travels back to our head office in South Kirkby, but not before paying the nursery and reception children a visit to issue out some high-fives! Here’s to Alice, our talented poet, and to many more celebrations of young talent in the future!
Stay cool and keep creating!
