This summer, as part our Break the Device campaign, we’re reviving the noughties and going back to basics. We want to encourage the nation to put their phones away and get back to the art of in-person connections, catch-ups, and conversations.
If you’re throwing a party this summer and you want guests to have the most fun possible and live in the moment, here’s our top ten tips for throwing a tech-free party.
-
Collect phones at the beginning of the night.
Start as you mean to go on! This will remove all temptation from guests. Out of sight, out of mind as they say, put them away in a draw or put them upstairs out of reach. This includes Apple watches or any devices that means guests are connected to the outside world. But keep them somewhere guests can check in case of emergency.
-
Strap phones to heads or bodies, GoPro style!
Rather than locking them away, put your guests’ phones to use where they are still technically in reach, but not for scrolling and messaging. Give your guests a strap so they can tie their phones to the head. Put it on camera mode and film parts of the night. The videos can be edited together after the party so you have the memories to last!
-
Try a themed night.
Throw it back to a tech-free time, whether it’s the Roaring 20s, Ancient Greece, the Wild West… every day life was a tech-free zone! Go full swing and decorate your house in your chosen theme, provide costume options and props, serve themed food and cocktails to really transport your guests. We’ve got loads of theme ideas for your party!

Activities to keep guests entertained.
An integral way to keep guests off phones is keeping them occupied. People mindlessly scroll when they’re bored, so by prepping your party with games and interactive elements, your guests won’t feel the urge to look at their phones at all! Plan ahead.
Don’t put it on your invites at it could be a put off for friends and family, but do give them a pre-warning that it will be a no-phone zone, so they can plan accordingly and let any relevant people know that they will be uncontactable.
-
Have designated periods of people being allowed to check their phones.
Set boundaries and have designated time slots where guests can check their phones, in case of emergency. Having boundaries and allowing controlled screen time will mean guests are less likely to crack, and more likely to join in the fun!
-
If guests do violate the rule, don’t call them out.
Parties are exciting and entertaining; guests don’t want to be getting told off in their free time!
-
Go novelty with a disposable camera.
One of the main reasons guests have phones at parties is to capture pictures and videos. Set out a polaroid camera if you have one or purchase a few cheaper disposable cameras to dot around. Guests will love the novelty; they won’t reach for their phones at all!
-
Use a vinyl or radio – old school style.
Another obvious reason guests (or the host!) rely on their phone at parties is for the music. Bluetooth speakers and devices are the go-to-for music. Similarly for Smart TVs with Spotify and music channels. To add a bit of nostalgia to your party and opt for a vinyl or CD player instead, or good old-fashion radio!
-
Incentivise
There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition. Incentivise your guests and offer a prize for the person who can stay off their phone for the longest!
