Father’s Day is on the horizon, and what better way to show the father figure in your life how much they mean to you than with a good old fashioned cocktail? While beer might be close to their heart, cocktails offer a refreshing way to mark Father’s Day in a different way – and you can personalise them based on flavours and ingredients you know they like.
If you’re looking for Father’s Day cocktails to shake up this June, you’re in the right place. Our mixologists here at The Ice Co have put together the ultimate dad drinks guide, ready for you to shake up…or stir.
1. Manhattan
This is the ultimate Father’s Day cocktail for whiskey lovers. Buy them a great bottle of Rye whiskey, some Angostura, and let them sit back and enjoy a heavy pour. If they prefer a sweeter mix, opt for a Bourbon whiskey instead.
Next comes the Vermouth. Depending on the kind of flavour preferred, you can add or as much or as little as you like. A dry Manhattan calls for a dry Vermouth, like Noilly Prat, whereas a sweet Manhattan needs a sweet Vermouth, like Cocchi Vermouth di Torino.
If you’re unsure of what kind of cocktail ingredients to buy, a good place to start, as noted by Laura Foster in Best Whiskies for Cocktails, is to ‘consider where in the world that whisky cocktail originated, and to look for products from the corresponding country.’
We also love this Whiskey Sour, check it out!
2. Moscow Mule
Perfect for a summer’s day, the Moscow Mule is a fiery, refreshing Father’s Day cocktail sure to hit the mark. Sophisticated and simple, this little number can be personalised too. Whether you opt to make a fiery and super gingery, or sweet and tame, the art in this cocktail is finding the perfect ginger beer.
If you go out shopping and wonder, ‘what’s the difference between ginger ale and ginger beer?’ – here it is. Ginger beer is brewed and fermented, while ginger ale is a carbonated beverage made from ginger, water and sugar. Because ginger beer has been fermented, it’s less fizzy but packs far more of a ginger punch.
3. Fiery Tequila Cocktail
For some, the ultimate Father’s Day drink is a Super Cube with a measure of scotch, for others it’ll be a crisp, refreshing cocktail like the Royal Crown. And then there’s the adventurous one who overdoes the spice and would drink a Mezcal-isco faster than you can say worm. This Spicy Tequila cocktail is for them. Turn up the heat by adding a couple of jalapeño slices to the drink itself, or even adding a couple of drops of Cholula Hot Sauce. It’s delicious, we promise!
4. A Fruity Fusion Cocktail
Because fruit cocktails aren’t just for the females. Tantalise your tastebuds with a fruity cocktail, perfect for a summer’s day. We can recommend the Mango and Strawberry Margherita, a slushy cocktail ideal for a special Father’s Day drink. Others we love include this Raspberry Cosmo, the Bramble, and the superbly sweet Strawberry Daiquiri.
5. A Fathers Day Drink with a coffee kick
If your Dad needs a bit of a boost this Father’s Day, the Espresso Martini is the ideal drink. But beware – if they are a coffee connoisseur, you’ll need to invest in some decent coffee! Check out this video that shows you how to make the perfect Espresso Martini. You could also opt for a non-alcoholic coffee-based drink. We love this Iced Coffee, that’s a delicious wake-up drink.
Whatever Father’s Day drinks you’re making, make sure your bar is fully stocked and that you don’t run out of staples. Think bitters, honey, fresh citrus, sweet and dry vermouth, and of course plenty of ice cubes. Don’t worry about using your initiative and tweaking recipes based on the drinker’s tastes, and have fun while you’re playing mixologist!
Cheers to all the father figures out there! Remember to always drink responsibly.
